Cobalt is a British featherweight robot which competed in the 2018 King of Bots UK International Championships. Armed with a powerful crushing weapon, it endured limited success in the main competition, losing its first qualification round to Barghest after getting turned over by the Team Cerastes machine and being left unable to self-right. Cobalt incurred another loss against Straddle 2 – in a battle where both robots became immobilized at the same time – before redeeming itself with a commanding knockout victory over Raving Luna-Tic and Furious George. This was enough for it to qualify for the 8 Way Melee, for a chance to secure the last place in the Top 20. However, Cobalt lost the battle to Barróg after getting stranded on the wall during the opening moments, resulting in its elimination from the main UK International Championships.

Cobalt also fought in a number of side events, including the Annihilator and a Tag Team battle, the latter partnered with Pendulum. In each, it achieved more success, reaching the second round of the former and winning its Tag Team battle on a Judges’ decision.

Design

Cobalt was a green and dark grey, four-wheel drive robot with a distinctive animalistic appearance, featuring a top panel designed to resemble an exposed ribcage. The robot was equipped with a large set of vertical crushing jaws at the front, which were capable of grabbing, lifting and causing considerable damage to opponents. Cobalt’s engineering and appearance attracted favorable comments from many King of Bots UK personnel, once being likened to a ‘mutant turtle’ by Samantha France. However, Cobalt’s top armor could be easily damaged, and the robot did not have a self-righting mechanism.
