钻地龙 (romanized as Zuān de lóng, translating to Drilling Dragon, referred to by Zhejiang STV as Drill Dragon) was a Chinese competitor robot which competed in Season 2 of King of Bots. Despite its unique weaponry, Drill Dragon was not selected by any celebrities during the first stage of the competition, relegating it to the redemption rounds. There, in a four-way rumble against Yesaji, Bullseye and Iron Rooster, one of the magnets forming Drill Dragon's design became dislodged and prevented it from moving at all. As a result, it lost its place in the competition at that stage.
The robot is based upon a featherweight (13.6kg/12lb) design built by the team.
Design[]
Drill Dragon was a somewhat wedge-shaped invertible robot, driven by two wheels. It was armed with a unique rotating weapon, in the form of a large drill. This uncommon weapon brought a surprise factor to Drill Dragon, although the robot needed to maintain contact with its opponent for a lengthy amount of time in order to cause meaningful damage. Furthermore, Drill Dragon did not appear to have any mechanisms to hold opponents in place, other than by ramming and pinning them against the wall. Nevertheless, Drill Dragon's side armor provided good protection, and its weapon was not affected by the robot being inverted. A thin rear wedge was also present at the back of the robot, serving as a kickstand.
Another unusual aspect of Drill Dragon's design was its use of magnets, possibly to aid with getting its drill into contact with other robots. However, these proved susceptible to getting dislodged and were instrumental in preventing it from moving at all in its only battle.[1]
Robot History[]
King of Bots II (Season 2)[]
Drill Dragon was among the Chinese robots available for selection in the opening rounds of the competition. However, it was largely ignored by the celebrity captains, and ultimately the first round concluded without Drill Dragon participating in a single battle. As a result, Drill Dragon was knocked into the redemption round, where it was drawn into a four-way rumble against Yesaji, Bullseye and Iron Rooster.
However, likely as a result of a dislodged magnet,[1] Drill Dragon completely failed to move from the outset of this battle, never leaving the corner it started in. The referee did not hesitate to count Drill Dragon out, and its only involvement took place when Yesaji rammed Bullseye into the same corner to KO it, with both immobile machines sitting beside each other for most of the fight.
According to Bunny Sauriol, Drill Dragon did begin to show signs of movement upon being nudged by Bullseye, but this came far too late to salvage its chances of survival.[1] Ultimately Yesaji won the battle over Iron Rooster on a Judges' decision, with Drill Dragon being eliminated from King of Bots II.
