"It is the master of the mechanical empire, the essence of the Mojia mechanism, and it is the master of defensive warfare — Juzi!"
— Official King of Bots website (archived)

矩子 (romanized as Jù zi, Jǔzi or Juzi, also referred to as Moment) was a heavyweight robot from Shandong, China which competed in the first season of King of Bots. Entered by a trio of mechanical engineers, captained by 26-year-old Xu Jian, it reached the second round after initially winning against the British entry Griffin on a Judges' decision. However, radio reception issues led to an unfortunate loss against Knife Legend, where Juzi and its opponent never made contact.

The Abstinence team with Juzi

Juzi was a black, gold and silver, two-wheel drive robot with a cut-off wedge shape, a top speed of 3 meters per second (10.8 km/h or approximately 6.7mph) and a heavy emphasis on defence. Much of the robot was heavily-armored, leading Xu Jian to claim that it was 'hard to break'.

At the front, Juzi was fitted with a large diagonally-mounted spinning bar ('axe'), capable of rotating at 1,000rpm. The weapon's orientation meant that it was not necessary to spin the bar through the body of the robot, although the weapon had a tendency to stop upon hitting other robots. Juzi's rear-mounted wheels were also exposed, leaving the tires especially vulnerable against other spinners. Additionally, it often suffered radio reception issues, as a consequence of its receiver being placed deep within its chassis and beneath the spinning bar.

Etymology[]

Juzi, along with the Mòshǒu team themselves (referred to as Team Moshou in Mech+ subtitles), drew major inspiration from the ancient Mohism philosophy. The robot itself was claimed to be named after the eponymous 'leader of the Mohist school', though this is more likely an allusion to the philosopher and Mohist founder Mozi.

Robot History[]

Season 1[]

Juzi made its King of Bots debut in Episode 3 of Season 1, where it fought British vertical crusher Griffin in the first round. Its debut was not without problems, however, as the Mòshǒu team had been unable to get its spinning 'axe' working during testing. The issue was rectified ten minutes before the battle was due to begin, allowing Juzi to fight as intended.

Moment vs Griffin 1

Juzi incapacitates Griffin's crusher

In the opening seconds, Juzi got its weapon up to speed as Griffin turned away from its opponent and drove behind the flame jets. Griffin reversed, turned and attempted to position itself for an attack on the Mòshǒu team's machine. In doing so, Griffin inadvertently exposed its side to Juzi, allowing Juzi's spinner to damage the hydraulic mechanism for its crusher and disable the weapon. The two competitors immediately separated, with Griffin pursuing and luring Juzi across the arena; eventually, it waited beside the far corner, before slamming head-on into Juzi. Griffin followed this up with a second head-on charge, but struggled for traction as it kept spinning over various arena hazards, seemingly unable to drive in a straight line. It stopped beside the floor rods, allowing Juzi to drive into its front and tear one of its forks off its hinges.

Moment vs Griffin 2

Juzi causes further damage to Griffin's forks through a head-on collision

As before, Griffin pursued Juzi once the latter’s weapon stopped spinning, repeatedly bumping it in the process, but without being able to grab hold of it as a result of its beak being disabled. Eventually, it started spinning on the spot between the circular saws and flame jets, and continued to do so for the remainder of the battle as it tried to grab Juzi again. Time ran out, with the battle going to a Judges’ decision as a result of both robots remaining mobile. The decision went in favour of Juzi allowing it to go through to the next round.

In the second round, Juzi fought a fellow bar spinner in Knife Legend.

Moment of Misfortune

Knife Legend vs Moment

The immobile Juzi is counted out

Both robots spent the early moments trying to spin up their weapons, but Juzi was the more tentative machine in doing so. As such, it fled from Knife Legend which inadvertently disabled its own weapon by slamming into the wall. Juzi had gained the advantage, but suddenly ground to a halt in the center of the arena due to radio reception issues. While Knife Legend circled around it, Juzi was counted out, and eliminated forty seconds into the battle, despite neither robot having made contact with the other. Juzi was not awarded a wildcard, and thus did not progress to the next round.
