Nigel Barrage is a British featherweight robot which competed in the 2018 King of Bots UK International Championships. Entered by Team Ballistix, it had a limited run of success, losing its first qualification round to Telekinesis after being flipped and having one of its wheels ripped off by the latter’s undercutter spinner. Nigel Barrage made up for this by winning its next battle by knockout, despite having one of its wheels dislodged by a ram from The Mighty Unicorn. However, it would subsequently withdraw from its third qualifier, resulting in Nigel Barrage being eliminated from the 2018 UK International Championships.

The robot’s name is a pun on British politician Nigel Farage; throughout the competition, team captain James Davies dressed as and performed impressions of Farage during interviews.

Design[]

Nigel Barrage was a purple, two-wheel drive robot armed with a two-toothed vertical flywheel, painted yellow. Part of the robot’s design paid homage to Nigel Farage himself, with both of its HDPE front panels being decorated with Farage’s eyes and eyebrows.

Outside King of Bots[]

Nigel Barrage competed in the FRA UK Featherweight Championship in August 2019, under temporary captaincy of Gregory Atkin. However, after competing in five battles against Forge Master II, Mitternacht, Luna-Tic, Crabsolutely Clawful and Barróg Doom, Nigel Barrage lost on every occasion, also falling early in the Tag Team competition.

Prior to building Nigel Barrage, Team Ballistix competed in Series 10 of Robot Wars with Donald Thump, a heavyweight with a name and design elements parodying 45th U.S. President Donald Trump. Equipped with a vertical bar spinner, and accompanied by impressions from James Davies, Donald Thump had limited success on the show, being eliminated from its heat after losing its Group Battle to Behemoth and its Redemption Round to The Swarm. Since April 2017, Donald Thump has also competed at various Extreme Robots events around the UK, eventually adopting an invertible design.
