Raving Luna-Tic (alternately spelt as Ravin Lunatic and originally known as Luna-Tic Mk2 during construction[1]) was a British featherweight robot built by Team Luna which competed in the 2018 UK King of Bots International Championships. Built as a successor to the team's original version of Luna-Tic, it enjoyed limited success in the main competition, being eliminated in the qualification rounds after finishing second to Take Cover, Blunt Force Trauma Remix and Cobalt respectively. In addition to the main UK International Championships, Raving Luna-Tic also fought in the Gladiator battle and a whiteboard match against Luna-Tic itself, but lost both times.

Design

As with its predecessor, Raving Luna-Tic was a four-wheel drive, box-shaped robot with an angled front wedge and angled sides, albeit with a sleeker and more compact profile. The robot was armed with a fast-acting, electrically-powered rear-hinged lifter (referred to as a 'flipper' on its statistics card), which operated using a linear actuator and had a lower lip sitting flush within the front wedge. Raving Luna-Tic's construction consisted of a HDPE center bulkhead with a 6mm HARDOX wedge and 3mm HARDOX sides plasma-cut by John Findlay[2], and a 2mm aluminium top panel. An optional 5mm HDPE top panel was also made, in order to offer Raving Luna-Tic greater protection against opponents armed with axe weapons.[3] Drive power came from a pair of Propdrive 5060 motors, which sent power to all four wheels through chain drive on each side.[4] Raving Luna-Tic was painted black with a light grey wedge and lifter lip, and decorated with decals of a cartoon alien mascot and the robot's logo, as well as a pair of flexible antennae.

Ravin Lunatic box rushes Take Cover

Ravin Lunatic box rushes Take Cover.

Ravin Lunatic's first match was against The Claw, and Take Cover. The match started well for it, with Ravin Lunatic box rushing Take Cover before it could spin up. After this it backed away as Take Cover got up to speed.

Ravin Lunatic then slammed into Take Cover sending the meltybrain spinner bouncing off its wedge, and into the air. Ravin Lunatic then went for the pit release as Take Cover went after The Claw, which had been having severe mobility issues from the start.

Ravin Lunatic then attempted to pit Take Cover, but gave up after a few attempts, before going after The Claw, which was now immobile near the pit. This allowed Take Cover to get up to speed again, Ravin Lunatic then attempted to slam it, but got sent spinning away by Take Cover's weaponry, and ripping part of the top off.

Ravin Lunatic then came in for another attack, but again suffered more damage with the top being completely ripped off. Ravin Lunatic then tried yet another attack, unfortunately like before Take Cover came out on top here, and Ravin Lunatic then stopped moving completely, it was the counted out meaning it had lost its first battle.
